Wedding Traditions at CANAL 337

It is such an honor to be a part of a couple’s wedding. It's beautiful to witness the couple's commitment to each other and to their families. We also enjoy witnessing each family’s unique personality, style and traditions. This past winter we were grateful to host a wonderful wedding ceremony and reception that was bursting with creative designs throughout.

We found one of these traditions particularly touching. First, guests were encouraged to write advice, well wishes and happy memories of their own weddings on a small piece of parchment paper. Then the messages were stuffed into a piñata which was then tightly sealed. This was no store bought piñata in the shape of a donkey that one might see at a child's birthday party. Instead the piñata had been custom made by hand in the shape of a pomander with frilled edges. The tradition calls for the couple to keep the piñata for one year and break it open on their first anniversary.

Many couples choose to signify the joining of their lives with a Sand Ceremony (pouring sand from two containers into one) or with a Unity Candle (taking the flames from two candles and lighting one larger candle with the separate flames). This couple took a more personal approach. At the beginning of the ceremony the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom each poured their familial color of paint onto a blank canvas. During the ceremony the couple poured a mixture of the two colors onto the solid colors. The paints merged together symbolizing the couple’s commitment to each other and the union of the bride, groom and their families. This unique alternative to standard traditions brought a personal touch to the ceremony creating an atmosphere where their guests felt like they were witnesses to something special. Now the couple has a true priceless piece of art, lovingly created together, that will help transform their house into a home.
